Барабанные тормоза

Are drum brakes really that popular? We will try to deal with you…

The principle of operation of drum brakes is quite simple: you press the handle and it pulls the cable (unlike cars on scooters, this moment is carried out by a cable). The cable is connected to the brake mechanism with the second end and unclenches the pads. When you release the brake lever, the spring compresses them back. It seems that what else is needed?, like a simple and fairly reliable mechanism:

1. The inner shell of the wheel, which the pads rub against when braking;

2. A special plate that unclenches these pads;

3. Return springs;

4. Brake pads;

5. Cam.

But then the minuses begin, which pushed the creators to massively switch to their disk counterparts.:

1. The braking efficiency is much lower, this is due to another method of coupling the pads with the road surface;

2. The cable is not as effective as the brake fluid. When using a brake fluid, almost all the force is transferred to the piston, which squeezes the pads.

3. The brake cable eventually loses its strength and becomes a "rubber band" (the brake handle sinks further when pressed, like a spring when pressed).

4. The brake cable may break (very rarely, but it happens).

5. They creak very much and quite often (especially Chinese ones), in order to lubricate the cam and clean the pads, it is necessary to remove the wheel entirely, which is very inconvenient.

Having a fairly large number of disadvantages, this type of brakes is still installed on the rear wheel today. Of course, with this kind of brakes, it reduces the cost of the scooter, slightly, but still. Manufacturers explain this step by the fact that, in their opinion, the rear wheel should not take an active (main) part in the braking process, but only slow down, and the drum brakes do this in full.

If the mass of your scooter is not very large, and you prefer to ride alone, then the ratio is as follows: in front-a disk, behind-a drum. But if the scooter weighs more than 100 kg and you often ride together, then the efficiency of the rear ones is quite low for this. And if such brakes are installed in the front, then be very careful, you will not be able to completely control the situation on the road.
